I fell in love with this place in 1984 when I lived at Reed Hall, located across the street on the University of Georgia campus. Quiet, peaceful and packed with history dating back to our country's Colonial period. A great place for studying, I developed a passion for collecting stone rubbings from ancient ornate, hand-carved monuments and headstones.

We stumbled upon the Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens, Georgia by accident and could not stop taking photos. The cemetery was established before the civil war and is it rich with historic marketers and monuments. The the entrance is juxtaposed across the railroad tracks from the modern University of Georgia Sanford Stadium and the grounds straddle the Oconee River. Simply beautiful. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

My wife and I were forced to call the Athens police department after an encounter with some extremely dangerous caretakers/security in trucks this Sunday. We visited the cemetery around 4pm and around 4:30pm some meth crazed "man" in a red Dodge Ram truck told us we had to leave immediately. The sign says the gate closes at 5pm. We made him aware of the existing closure time and headed to our car. To summarize the events that followed: He then sped towards us in his truck, attempting to run down our teenaged daughter, his oversized friends then sped in with another "Bama" sized truck and blocked us in. At this point they proceeded to threaten us. The whole event unfolded like Deliverance, and I have never experienced anything like it in my almost 40+ years on this planet. We called the police and filed the necessary report. I have contacted our lawyers and have sent them the video footage of the entire ordeal. A lawsuit is in progress. If indeed these white supremacist hillbillies work here, then I would strongly urge all to avoid visiting. See the attached photo for the leader in the attempted murder.

A must see for a nostalgic Victorian view of Athens over 150 years forward

we were confronted by caretakers who approached us with intent to fight and acted as if they were going to run us down for apparently not leaving fast enough. trashy white guy in a red dodge ram told us to leave at 430 (even though the sign says 5) and as we crossed the road to our car he sped up his truck as if to plow down our teenaged daughter. accused us of trespassing (??!) in a public historic place that invites visitors until 5pm. police were notified of intent to assault. watch out for this place. seems to be run by white supremacist bullies.
